Web Publisher's Note:

I truly hope that the readers of this "book" will consider the heart and soul, wisdom and wit that went into it.

More than twenty years have passed since I left Shawnee Mission North to face the world and make my way in it, and the few good lessons I learned in high school were offered to me by Dr. David Farson and others like him.  I do not use the word "taught", because I believe that we learn best by example and experience, and that teaching is not usually done TO us, but it is, in fact, an effect to be observed and recognized in retrospect, when and IF we absorb our lessons.

I know for a fact that there are still parents, school administrators and others who believe that they know best what will serve our children as lessons, in school and out of it, and some of these people will take issue with some of the words, phrases and concepts that Dr. Farson has sprinkled throughout his work.  I pray that these wise, but sensitive folks will count to 10, and 10 again, before they take umbrage at  the further edition, revision and re-publication of Better Than Necessary.  I believe with all my heart that it IS a good work, and that absorbing it, adding to it, and passing it on will be another good deed which, if we can shoulder the burden of our past, can be "done" by us all.
